On October 26, 1995, the East Coast Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to the city of Trenton, New Jersey.

The Trenton Titans drafted their first player, left wing Troy Mann from the Mississippi Sea Wolves, in the ECHL's expansion draft on June 30, 1999. Four additional players were selected in the expansion draft and three more in the dispersal draft. Dan Lupo, Trenton's top pick in the Dispersal Draft, became the first player in franchise history to sign a contract with the Titans.

The Trenton Titans took to the ice for their first East Coast Hockey League game, on October 14, 1999 and completed their inaugural season with a 37-29-4 record (.557) and fourth place in the Northeast Division of the Northern Conference.

In 2004-2005, the Titans had their most successful season, winning the coveted Kelly Cup by defeating the Florida Everblades. The Kelly Cup is awarded annually to the playoff champion of the ECHL.

On September 28, 2006, the Titans were purchased by the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are the first NHL Franchise to own and operate both Double A (Trenton) and Triple A (Lowell) minor pro hockey franchises.

The Devils make their home at the 7,605-seat Sovereign Bank Arena in downtown Trenton, and have been bringing exciting hockey to Central New Jersey since 1999. Since their inception seven years ago, Trenton has a history of excellence. They are a perennial playoff team, appearing in the post-season all but once.

The 2000-01 season saw the team on the cusp of success as they reached the Kelly Cup Final for the first time. Trenton returned to the Final in 2004-05, and defeated the Florida Everblades in six games to bring the Kelly Cup to New Jersey – the first championship of any kind for Trenton in fifty-four years.

The Trenton Devils are member of the ECHL – North America’s premiere "AA" hockey league. The ECHL is the leading professional developmental league for the American Hockey and the National Hockey League.
