Atlantic City may be the gaming capital of the east coast,
but before it became known for gambling - it was the number
one tourist destination in America in the mid 1800's. The Miss
America Pageant was started to bring tourists in at the end
of the season - that's why it's held in September. Anyone who
has played the game of Monopoly is well familar with the streets
of Atlantic City. The first boardwalk in the world was built
in Atlantic City, to prevent people from tracking sand from
the beach.
 Atlantic City, commonly referred to as AC, is the only Jersey Shore town that
has a city atmosphere. Although the city has never fully recovered from the
Great Depression, the casinos have done a lot to bring life back to the city.
There has been renewed develolpment the last few years which is truly transforming the Atlantic City into a true vacation destination.
