The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) was formed in 1970 to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecking ball and now operates the Estate as Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum.

Attributed to the renowned architect Frank Furness, this 18-room mansion is one of the finest examples of “Stick Style” architecture in America. The Estate was designed for Dr. Emlen Physick, descendant of a wealthy and famous Philadelphia family, and his widowed mother, Mrs. Ralston and maiden Aunt Emilie. Although Emlen followed the family tradition and completed his medical training, he never practiced, but lived the life of a country gentleman in Cape May.

The exterior of the Estate is distinguished by Furness’ trademark oversized features, including gigantic upside-down corbelled chimneys, hooded “jerkin-head” dormers, and the huge stick-like brackets on the porch.

Inside you will also find the distinct signature of Furness, who designed much of the interior molding, fireplaces, and even furniture. Many original furnishings are on display throughout the house. Attention to detail is evident in every room, under the direction of Curator Elizabeth Bailey and her staff.

The history of the Emlen Physick Estate comes to life through knowledgeable interpreters, including Dr. Physick himself, during on-going tours and special events. Dr. Physick often plays host to a famous Cape May visitor, John Philip Sousa, who tells of his performances at Cape May’s famous Congress Hall Hotel. Physick Estate exhibits and tours change throughout the year to reflect the seasons and different aspects of the Victorian lifestyle enjoyed by Dr. Physick and his family in Cape May, America’s first seaside resort.

MAC has also restored several of the Estate’s outbuildings, including the Carriage House, built in 1876. Today, it houses the Carriage House Gallery, home to changing exhibits, a museum shop, and the Twinings Tearoom, where visitors can enjoy an authentic English experience at luncheon and afternoon tea. Also on the Estate is Hill House, which was Dr. Physick’s hobby house, where MAC’s business office is now located.

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Cape May’s Victorian heritage. MAC also fosters the performing arts. MAC membership is open to all.
