The fortifications seen today in the park were erected in 1897 in anticipation of the Spanish-American War. Today people can learn about these installations and take self guided walking tours. Construction was started in 1872. By 1876, when all work was halted, two of the originally planned twenty gun emplacements and two magazines in the mortar battery were completed. Troops were stationed here between 1897 to 1922. Shortly after World War I Fort Mott and the other two Delaware installations became obsolete as the principal defense on the Delaware River with the construction of Fort Saulsbury, near Milford, Delaware. The federal government continued to maintain a caretaking detachment at the fort from 1922 to 1943. In 1947 New Jersey acquired Fort Mott as a historic site and on June 24, 1951 it was opened as a state park. In addition to the fortification, you can also get a look at the fire control towers and other support buildings like the post headquarters and guardhouse. The NJ Coastal Heritage Trail Welcome Center houses, which is located in the Ordnance Storehouse, displays illustrating Fort Mott's long history. Here you can also get more information about things to do along the DelSea Region of the heritage trail.
