Battle of Monmouth This is the location of one of the largest battles of the American Revolution. It took place during the course of two days starting on June 28th and lasting until June 29th. Commanded by General Sir Henry Clinton, the 20,000 British were marching back to New York City when it was intercepted by a Continental force of 15,000 commanded by General George Washington. On June 29th, the British finally broke off from the battle after suffering 2 to 3 times the number of casualities as the American forces. From here the British made their way up to Sandy Hook - where they then took boats back to New York City.
